Daily news in a small town can be immensely fulfilling, but not often financially lucrative. Like many news hounds before me, I strayed from the field early on, after college—driven by financial necessity. But, in what I’ve come to learn is a typical career arc, I eventually returned to the fold, this time driven by desire. I believe one of my venerable forebears in journalism, Horace Greeley (who is also quoted elsewhere on this site) said it best:
"Journalism will kill you, but it will keep you alive while you’re at it."
